CMPC Companies Chairman is chosen as “Executive of the Year” by EY and “El Mercurio”
EY and El Mercurio recognized Luis Felipe Gazitúa for his business career with this year’s award given jointly by the entities. The Sunday, April 2 edition of the El Mercurio newspaper interviewed the CMPC Companies Chairman about his management role and challenges in the company.
CMPC Companies Chairman Luis Felipe Gazitúa in conversation with “El Mercurio” referred to his experience running a company that has more than 100 years of history and a great global presence. He said that he’d never imagined becoming Chairman of the “paper company”, and discussed the problems they had to address with the rural fires in Chile this past February as well as the intentionality behind their ignition. For us, the emergency isn’t over yet,” he said, detailing the company’s plan to address the environmental and social consequences left in the wake of the fires.
At the same time, he highlighted the leadership that has arisen within the company, helping them play a supportive role in neighboring communities. He talked about some of the projects CMPC is working on such as the upcoming inauguration of the CMPC – Duoc UC Nacimiento campus, a professional institute in the Biobío Region of Chile with an investment of more than USD 20 million that currently has about 200 students enrolled.
Regarding the conflict facing the company in the Araucanía Region due to land takeovers and attacks by violent groups, he acknowledged frustration over the indifference on the part of the ruling elite and stressed that the problem of poverty in the area is gigantic. He said that, for the most part, “The Mapuche world wants peace, work and development.”
