CMPC UC Outdoor Festival: A sustainable zero-waste sporting event

This Saturday, November 5, sports will take over the hills of San Carlos de Apoquindo. The CMPC UC Outdoor Festival is an event that brings together the disciplines of Trail Running and Mountain Biking in the San Carlos de Apoquindo foothills. The sustainable event has special initiatives for reducing waste and helping protect the forests.

The festival was organized by the Catholic University Sports Club and CMPC, offering tracks for children and adults with distances of 3, 5, 10, 21 and 42 kilometers for the Trail Run competition and 12, 27 and 36 kilometers for the MTB challenge.

Over the years this sporting event has positioned itself as a must-see on the calendar for outdoor sports fans. The Cordillera Park trails have witnessed the amazing talent and abilities of runners and cyclists who have accepted the challenge of the Trail Run and Mountain Bike competitions.

Once the athletes cross the finish line, the festival will continue with a space that welcomes the whole family, offering live music, culinary delights, an open bar of Austral beer and assorted stands.

“Leave a Green Footprint”

Under the slogan “Leave a Green Footprint”, the event aims to be friendly with both the environment and the natural surroundings of the hills and trails where the festival is held. This is why CMPC pledged to donate one native tree for each registered participant. The donated species include Ruil, Quillay, Hualo and Roble, and they’ll be planted in Empedrado, Constitución, Temuco and Los Angeles in Chile in May of 2023. To date, the festival has around 1,000 entries, totaling 1,000 new native trees for the southern zone of Chile.

Furthermore, for the first time the competition route will be marked with 100% biodegradable paper tape marker that was dyed with watercolors so it can do its job of visually outlining the pathway without polluting the environment. CMPC’s Biopackaging department developed a solution that sought to be an alternative to the polyester and plastic route markers that are commonly used in outdoor competitions.

Additionally, the event will have five recycling bins that can all be used to collect cardboard, paper, PET/PP, aluminum cans and glass. A monitor at each recycling station will direct people on how to properly recycle and separate items in order to meet the zero waste goal set for the end of the day.
