FAMILIES AFFECTED BY RECENT HEAVY RAIN IN SOUTH CENTRAL CHILE RECEIVE BEDS AND BUNK BEDS

Wind and rain storms affected the regions of O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble and Biobío and also hit the town of San Ignacio in the region of Ñuble. CMPC, Desafío Levantemos Chile [the Support Chile Challenge] and the municipality came together to deliver this aid.

The Diguillín River in the Ñuble Region of south-central Chile rose rapidly over the course of a few hours resulted in severe flooding. Similar to the heavy rains of June that affected the area, the most recent storms have brought new challenges to local residents, who were quickly evacuated.

Given the context, plans were coordinated to go to their immediate aid. Thus, the Directorate of Community Development (Dideco) of San Ignacio contacted a group of 13 affected families and gave them essential items, such as beds and bunk beds, which was carried out by CMPC’s community relations department in Ñuble and Desafío Levantemos Chile.

“I’m happy to receive the aid. Yesterday the mayor went to my house, as it was still raining. Several maintenance workers also helped us with some of the installations. They told me that I had to come here to pick up the bed, which is something that we urgently needed, especially since everything has been so bad lately and work hasn’t been great either. This is a valuable contribution to our family,” said Linda Valenzuela, a resident of the Las Quilas sector.
“With the storms – both the ones we had back in June and now – there was some damage and a little bit of flooding.

This happens because there aren’t any water diversion channels where I live. The rainfall has formed little pools in the ground, which unfortunately ends up reaching the house. So this aid has been very nice, especially for those of us who have children, since it gives us a bit more peace of mind at home,” said Benidio Freire, a resident of the Cantarranas area of the San Ignacio district.

San Ignacio Mayor Patricio Suazo said, “This is a tremendous contribution for local residents especially because of the problems they have had due to the intense weather fronts that have come through. It’s great that the CMPC Company has made its own contribution in support of these families, which will help improve the quality of life in their homes.”

“Unfortunately, they were extremely impacted by the flooding of the Diguillín River that invaded their homes and deprived them of such basic assets like their beds. Today, under the framework of this new emergency, we came to support of these 13 families to try to normalize their routines a little and improve their quality of life,” said Carina Pérez, head of the CMPC Ñuble community relations department.

The delivery ceremony took place in the auditorium of the municipality, with neighbors and affected families in attendance. A total of nine beds and four bunk beds were donated in accordance with the needs of each family group.
