The first skatepark in the town of Quilleco in Chile was just inaugurated

The ceremony was attended by the district mayor in south-central Chile as well as different local authorities and representatives of the private world, including CMPC, a company that made a donation to young people and invited prominent athletes to participate.

More than 60 excited people gathered in the town of San Lorencito de Quilleco in the Biobío Region of south-central Chile, expectantly waiting for the inauguration of the district’s first skatepark. The facility was built with funds awarded by the municipality in order to promote sports and healthy lifestyles among the younger generation of Quilleco.

District mayor Rodrigo Tapia went to the sports center’s inauguration, noting that “This is a unique space in an area that has 236 families with a lot of children and young adults. One of our goals as a municipality is for our young people to spend their free time on sports such as this one and similar activities.”

CMPC also participated in the skatepark’s inauguration. The company donated skateboards to the youths and invited professional skaters to teach attendees more about this sport, such as skateboarding tricks and tips for putting skateboards together and properly maintaining them.

One of the guests was Juan Pablo Orozco, who has been skateboarding for 12 years. The athlete spent time with the young people and at the end of the event he said, “Having these spaces is important. It means a lot to the community since it offers a healthy, clean place, free of drugs and alcohol. This sport teaches you wonderful values that show you how to honor the world in a better way.” He also gave some advice to anyone just getting starting skateboarding.” Just keep going. Don’t let falls keep you down. This is a high-risk sport, but the important thing is to get back up, persevere and help others get back up, too.”

CMPC Rucamanqui Community Relations Manager Santiago Ramírez said this space is important because it will let “young people enjoy outdoor activities in a very healthy way. By engaging in sports, communities are formed, and through these relationships respect and healthy coexistence are fostered.”

The municipality has stated that they are currently working on new projects to bring sports and recreation closer to the community. A few of the project in the portfolio include building a municipal swimming pool for youths and adults as well as improving existing spaces such as soccer fields and dressing rooms.
