Young people rescuing native plants
15 de April, 2019
After the 2017 wildfires that occurred in the central and southern area of Chile, 95% of the surface of the commune of Empedrado, in the Maule region, was affected.
This locality has always been the home of a unique arboreal species, the ruil, which after various efforts employed by CMPC -as its protection in the High Conservation Area of Los Ruiles de Empedrado or its cultivation in the nurseries of the company- has managed to reappear after the catastrophe.
However, the efforts to reforest the ruil and to protect it, do not stop. That is why CMPC is also focused on environmental education and on involving citizens in the care of the plant.
Thus, the company guided students of the San Ignacio de Empedrado School in the creation of a nursery, and donated the trays to grow seeds of native trees that will be planted in the future park of the commune and in other territories of it.
According to the mayor of Empedrado, Manuel Báez, “this great project will allow us to cultivate the ruil with our children. They will learn about the seed, how to grow it in these trays and learn together, with their teachers and the great support of CMPC, to develop the project”. The mayor also said that this is a pilot project of ecological education that he wants to implement in the commune, where children and young people can grow and plant species for the future.
